February 2007 Chapter Meeting Highlights: Highlights: Our February meeting was held on Saturday Feb 10th at UTD. Tricia Richmond brought a selection of her FDC's including recent 2007 releases for Hershey Kisses, Ella Fitzgerald and Oklahoma. As usual these covers were for sale. Jesse Covey showed us an example of a Oklahoma First Day of Sale cover which he received on a #10 envelope. Jones McConnell brought an album with a group of his covers. Chapter Business: Our Business meeting began shortly after 10AM. A motion was made to send a contribution of $100 from our chapter treasury to UTD in appreciation of their providing us with a place to meet. The motion passed and a check was sent to the Special Collections area-Wineburgh Philatelic Library this past week. We discussed our meeting schedule for the first half of 2007. I expect that Mike Gibson will be our speaker in March and that Bob McDermott will make a presentation at TEXPEX. Bob Benner was our speaker on February 10 - his subject was the Transportation Coils series. The presentation was most informative, Bob had examples of almost all the coil issues in plate number or line strips of five. He gave checklist handouts and a color photocopy of all the issues. We opened a coil roll that he had where he showed that two plate numbers (1 and 2) appeared alternately on the same roll. In addition Bob showed us an album of First Day Covers. Bob's presentation was very informative and obviously took some time to prepare. Thanks Bob. Our meeting adjourned at 12:05. Items of Interest: We had a visitor to our meeting and hopefully a new member. His name is Bob Emrick. Bob is an artist and a part time hand painted cachet maker. Bob brought examples of his work and we were all impressed by the quality of his covers. Bob is still employed in the printing business so he works on the covers in his spare time. You can learn more about Bob and his covers in the January 15th issue of First Days. I would also recommend you look at his web site for color illustrations of many of his covers. http://www.emrickcachets.com. Next meeting is March 17th - St. Patricks Day at the Wineburgh Philatelic Library at UTD in Richardson (click here for directions). Regards, |
